VALERIAN ( Valeriana officinalis ) A perennial herbal plant, grows tall and makes an attractive display specimen. Plants produce very fragrant flowers in May-June and last all summer long. Valerian roots are considered one of the world's best herbal tranquilizers. Very easy to grow, Valerian is a hardy plant and can easily be grown from seed. Plants require full sun to part shade, rich fertile garden soil, but can tolerate average well drained soil free of rocks and weed debris. Roots are harvested in the fall the 2nd year after the plant begins to turn yellow and appears to be dying. Valerian is a herbaceous perennial and will grow in ZONES 3-9
